DC United Next Coach Cup | Semifinals

I find it somewhat surprising that of the quarterfinal contests, the only one that could be described as "close" was the Colin Clark v. Richie Williams matchup. I suppose that could either speak to the relative strength of the survivors or the sad lack of quality in the candidate pool. Regardless, now that we're down to a final four, I expect things will take a turn for the more competitive, though each of the remaining contestants has some glaring weakness that might mar their bid. Rather than outline those weaknesses here and perhaps influence the vote, I'll wait for a wrap-up post on the whole competition. So cue up "Eye of the Tiger" and let's get this thing going...

Voting wraps up on Friday, leaving us the weekend for the Next Coach Cup final.

  1. I haven't been paying much attention to the progression and bracketing here, just voting, but it occurs to me...was there ever really any doubt among us as to how this would come out?

  2. I've found some of the voting to be interesting (4 quarterfinals pitting MLS guy vs. non-MLS guy, 3 won by non-MLS guys), though I expected Porter and Olsen to be the clear favorites. I was particularly surprised by the lack of support for MLS assistants and the strong showing by Earnie Stewart, who, last I checked, is a front office guy in the Netherlands, not a coach. Now if the vote were for replacing Kasper/Payne, I bet you could do a lot worse than Stewart...

  3. Surprised that Porter made it this far to be honest. He's a good coach but he turned us down last year.

  4. I think Porter's getting the "if only we'd gone with him vote," prompted by the disaster of this season for DCU and the success his Akron side has been enjoying.

Either that or folks see him as particularly shrewd for seeing the rot at the core of the club and turning down their offer to captain a sinking ship.

  5. I am even more impressed with Porter as a coach this year, because he is doing it again without Bunberry on the field. Sure, he wont coach here for whatever reason, but I WANT him to coach here.

  6. He lost that kid Gavin, a big part of his midfield, to Chivas USA as well.

  7. If we're voting to replace K/P, the final is probably something like Dave Johnson v. Steve Goff. Or maybe Paulie from Barra gets into the mix...
