Oh Dear.

"That position [central defender], it is quite amazing how deep we are there. The guys that are set there are Carlos Bocanegra and Oguchi Onyewu, and we are building challenges behind that with Michael Orozco, Clarence Goodson, Tim Ream, George John."

- Jurgen Klinsmann (via the Boston Globe), USMNT boss and delusional madman, on the US's depth at center back. Sigh.

  1. Geoff Cameron, Zak Whitbread, and (when he returns) Omar Gonzalez could be on that list as well.

While no position could be described as "deep" for the USMNT (except possibly GK) there are a lot of positions that are more critical.

  2. I wouldn't call that list "quite amazing," would you? I see one good option (Onyewu), one on his last international legs (Boca), and a bunch of guys with a patchy (or non-existant) history of international appearances.

I'd also argue that midfield, right the way across, is deeper than keeper, but I take your point as regards up top and at the back.
