FBF Glossary: Mivdun

The DC United front office's elusive White Whale during the 2009 pre-season, Mivdun is an abbreviation for Mystery Veteran Defender of Unknown Nationality. The FO's answer appeared to come in the form of the 34-year old Brazilian Roger. This despite the fact that Roger was a converted left back who lacked size, was coming off an injury, and was . . . well, 34 years old. Sadly, we'll never know what Roger might have done in a United uniform. After a short stay in camp, he decided that MLS wasn't for him.

The FO's immediate response to Roger's departure was to make vague claims about "Plan B" which soon faded into "maybe in the summer," and ultimately resolved into "we're happy with the young guys we've got." Then, when all hope seemed lost, they pulled a Midcon out of their hat! A handful of appearances for Red Star Belgrade and a solitary Canadian cap were not enough to land Dejan Jakovic the coveted moniker of Mivdun (pesky thing, that veteran status), but his Croat-Serb-Canuck heritage, playing position, and "who?" name recognition certainly fit the bill of a Mystery Defender of Confused Nationality.
